“I would tell Brendan Smith get involved in that every day, all day,” Blashill said. “He’s going in to help Hank out and I was really glad he jumped in there.

“I’d tell him to do it again for sure and if we’ve got to kill a penalty for it, we’ll kill a penalty for it. Over the long haul of the year, we’ll stick up for each other every night.”

Nice change of tune from Babcocks turn the other cheek and our PP is our enforcer crap. The only problem with this though is the Wings have a cream puff lineup and every team in the league knows it. Smith, Ericsson and Abdelkader don't scare anyone in fights even non fighters.

Teams will continue to target the Wings top players and take runs at them every game because they know there is only 3 guys that might drop the gloves on the entire roster and none of them are guys that will give anyone a beating. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are use to the abuse and are showing the wear and tear from it every season with injuries. Tatar, Nyquist and Larkin will need to get use to it now because it doesn't look like Holland is going to bring in some toughness to the 4th line anytime soon. Wings likely have the softest 4th line in the league with little to no size/toughness on the other 3 lines or the defense either.

I don't mind a mostly skilled team but you need a little nastiness somewhere in the lineup if it's not on the 4th line.

Agreed.

we did the skilled thing, now its time to get tough and back to the grit known in the 80s and early 90s... fighting is done, but still can be gritty/tough, which we are not.

I thought both teams skated very well last night, and at times Detroit took the play to Buffalo with quality scoring chances. Goaltending seemed a bit suspect as I figured Ullmark should have been in better position to make a couple of those saves instead of giving up the goals.

Momentum definitely shifted our way in the third and OT with the 2 minute PP that gave us multiple chances to finish the game. Good on your team to keep the puck out and win it in the shootout.

Ultmately, I'm just happy to see the Sabres compete with great teams this year. It's been a struggle the last few seasons to witness the garbage on ice

The skilled thing is what's going to help you win games in the regular season and playoffs. A mix of skill and grit is ideal, but going back to the grit known in the 80's and early 90's is an AWFUL idea. Do you remember that time period? It wasn't until the Wings adopted a more skilled approach that they truly started having success.

I'd like to see Mitch Callahan get his chance on the 4th line. That guy is as tough as nails and doesn't care what he has to do to help the team. I'm hoping that Miller's gone after this season. It's great that he's an MSU alum but we need a 4th line guy that can kill penalties and provide some more sandpaper in our lineup.
